How much does dog training generally cost?
There’s an age old saying which goes something like “not all angels have wings, most of them are born with fur”. This describes our emotions and feelings towards dogs perfectly. Among the countless dog breeds in India or abroad humans for the most part treat dogs like furry angels and virtually all of us who own dogs treat them like a part of the family. However, like all family members most of the time when we absolutely adore them and shower them with all the love and affection in the world but there’s also a substantial minority of the time when we (for the lack of a better word) don’t. There are bound to be situations when your dog would misbehave, bark incessantly or plainly disobey your commands and be difficult with you. All these things are bound to happen if your dog isn’t properly trained. Training a dog (irrespective of the dog’s breed) is very similar to training/raising a child to be a model citizen when he/she grows up, you reward them when you deem a particular behavior to be good while discouraging negative tendencies your pet might have. This principle/training method is called positive reinforcement training method which would definitely work wonders if you’re persistent enough and give enough time to your furry canine friend and you wouldn’t need a professional trainer. But sadly, most of us don’t have enough time due to other commitments and can’t devote enough hours to our dogs training schedule which might lead to bad behavior later on.
So, if you don’t have enough time for your dog’s training or your dog has some aggression, anxiety or some other psychological issues which are too much for you then you need to hire a dog trainer. Various dog trainers charge differently based on their overall experience and proven expertise in the industry. If we’re talking averages then dog training in India could set you back anywhere from Rs. 5,000 per month to Rs. 50,000 per month. We must clarify that we don’t mean there aren’t any dog trainers out there who charge less than 5,000 and we certainly aren’t implying there are no trainers who charge more than 50K per month (trust us there are many celebrity dog trainers who charge a fortune). The figures we gave are just the average lower end and higher end threshold figures for professional dog training services in India. Training cost depends on the following parameters:
- Duration of training
- Complexity of the issue with your dog’s behavior
- Whether you’re applying for group training or personalized training
- Whether you’re opting for training your dog at home or at the trainer’s facility
- Experience/Expertise of the trainer you hire
To elaborate, longer duration, greater complexity of the issue with your dog’s behavior, opting for individual training over group training, training your dog at your location vs trainers’ facility and hiring a more experienced trainer equals higher prices. It is highly recommended that you’re actively involved in your dog’s training program as most trainers maintain that your dog’s behavioral issues have more to do with your lack of leadership than your dog’s inadequacies. Here are a few things you should keep in mind before embarking on your dog’s training journey:
- Know what you’re looking to get out of the training program i.e., what is the problem with your dog’s behavior and what’s the ideal behavior your dog should learn.
- Commit to the course and trust your trainer.
- Don’t get frustrated and punish your dog violently if it’s having trouble with some commands when you’re trying out certain things your dog trainer has instructed you to do.
- Set specific times for training, walks, feeding etc. for your dog and stick to them and do everything your trainer asks you to do.
- Don’t feed your dog before you’ve eaten to assert your dominance.
- Don’t allow your dog to pull the leash during walks and make sure it doesn’t walk in front of you (your dog would think it’s the leader of the pack if it’s leading you). Ideally your dog should walk alongside you.
If you do all these things then your dog would start to understand your authority and it’d be more likely to obey your commands. The things we mentioned above should become second nature for you as you’d have to do them with virtually every dog, you’d ever own irrespective of whether it’s a foreign breed or one of the dog breeds in India. Doing these things is essential because it’d let your dog know who’s the leader/alpha of the pack.
It is essential that you understand that the trainer’s job isn’t just training your dog but also training you to be a good leader of the pack. We wish you all the best in your dog’s training journey and we hope you and your canine friend achieve all your objectives.
